Gilbert M. Avent, SMC
I am Gilbert Avent, and I live in the quaint town of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. My formative years, rooted in the supportive community of Northwest Halifax High School in Littleton, NC, set the stage for a life intertwined with music and mentorship.
My academic and musical journey took a significant turn at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), where I pursued a degree in General Music. In this nurturing environment, I delved deeply into my primary instrument, the alto saxophone, studying under the expert tutelage of Dr. Keith Philbrick. My musical prowess extended to the clarinet, under the guidance of Mrs. Tomisha Price Brock, leading me to a first-place victory at the Intercollegiate Music Association solo competition.
At ECSU, my commitment to music saw me participate in every ensemble available, from the ECSU Marching Sound of Class and Symphonic Wind Ensemble to the ECSU/Albemarle Symphony Orchestra, the Collegians Jazz Ensemble, the University Choir, and the Saxophone Ensemble. My engagement extended beyond performance; I am proud to have been a part of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society, and Sigma Alpha Pi.
My time at ECSU was about personal growth and laying the groundwork for my future societal contributions. In 2020, I founded a cultural arts company driven by a mission to enrich lives through the arts. This venture was a testament to my belief in the transformative power of music and culture.
Transitioning from student to educator, I carried the lessons and inspirations from ECSU into my professional life. As a college mentor, I endeavoured to guide and inspire students, echoing the mentorship I had received. My passion for music education led me to become a high school band director, where I had the privilege of sharing my love for music with young, aspiring musicians. Here, I was to rebuild the band program, which was challenging. However, I allowed all the students to build and carry on the program's traditions—and allowed for a seamless tradition for a new director to be in a better position than I had to start.
Now, as a middle school music teacher, I continue on my path of influencing and inspiring the next generation. My journey, punctuated by performances on the alto saxophone and professional engagements, is a testament to my dedication to spreading the joy of music.
In my spare time, I thoroughly enjoy travelling domestically and internationally. I have been fortunate to perform in concerts and gigs, networking and learning from other cultures. I've been able to donate my time and available funds to help those in need to aid them as generosity is in my nature. As I am in the business of cultural arts, each trip can be referenced and used in the classroom to reinforce lessons provided to students.
From the small town of Roanoke Rapids to the vibrant community of ECSU and into the broader world, where I strive to make a difference through music and education. My life's harmonies blend learning, teaching, and the unending pursuit of musical excellence.
